I recently celebrated my 66th Birthday on July 9th. I am still pretty good, have my health for the most part and try to keep active. Of course, every now and then I bemoan my advancing years and long for the days when I was younger, faster, thinner and seemed to have my whole life ahead of me. The morning of my birthday , I was at a restaurant being treated to breakfast. I found myself parked beside a beautiful classic vintage automobile, perhaps on its way to an antique car show. The owner was standing beside it and I commented on how great it looked. When I inquired about the year and make, he proudly replied that it was a 1952 Chevy Deluxe edition. There was something about the coincidence that did not escape me. It was the same year as my birth! He went on to explain that it was in top top shape, had “most” of its original parts and could still turn heads. That’s when it hit me. I have to start thinking of myself as “classic”, someone with mileage and lots of tune-ups but still with most of the original parts. I began thinking about the journey this car had taken over the years, where it had been and who had owned it. It had history. It might have even had a few accidents, something that sidelined it for a time. However, here I was looking at this incredible 1952 vehicle that had stood the test of time. Someone had taken the care to restore it and graced the world with its uniqueness. I made up my mind. I am going to become a “classic” with all my blessings, my imperfections, life experiences and age. I am not ready for the scrapyard yet. So here’s to beauty in age and blending in with the new. Take time to restore yourself. Keep yourself in the road as long as you can…..and welcome others to ride along with you!
I am not old. I am vintage!
