I am currently reading one of Pope Francis’ latest books, The Name of God is Mercy. Of course, for the Catholic Church, this is the Jubilee Year of Mercy. It is a time for the church to reach out, to recognize and understand that we, as humans, are wounded in so many ways. It is a time to let people know that they are truly beloved divine sons and daughters and that there is nothing that causes separation from God except for our decision to alienate ourselves from the source of love that created us. God does not move. We do. The Church, I think, has elected a pope who is invitational, welcoming and ready to listen to the “cry of the poor” There are those, myself included, who will say that the church does not move fast enough and that there are things that should be more consistent with today’s world view. I have come to realize that the Church does move forward. We have seen it throughout history, but it is a slow process with much discussion and global input. Some may be so annoyed by Church teaching, that they completely cut themselves off from continuing a dialogue or a relationship. However, while we patiently wait, what is stopping us from contributing to the Kingdom of God using our own merciful heart? Keep being open to the Spirit. Develop that personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Become like him. There are all kinds of people who exist around us who are marginalized, needy and poor. Reach out. Just as we are present to a member of our own family when they carry burdens, let us reach out to our global brothers and sisters united in the work of Christ. We are all wounded. We all seek extra moments of grace at one time or another and need others to enter our darkened corners with love and compassion, warmth and assurance. We are all in this life together. What can you do in your family, your community, your church, your work, to show the face of God? Even the smallest action will help others and take you in directions you may never have expected.
